Ponca City, Oklahoma was my new home and I began to learn from a real expert all the things that it took to become an excellent horse person. My new boss, Jack Dye, had been training horses for many years and knew how to get the best out of them. Hands on experience with a wise coach is what it takes to do the best job possible and that is exactly what I was getting. I was in horse heaven and felt that I had made the right choice for my future. We had new colts coming in every couple of months and I learned how to get them started and make decisions on which were the best for the track and which were going to be better riding horses. During this time we had a 2 year old mare come in that I really took a liking to, she had been an orphan foal and was a real people horse. Her name was Tavas Savannah and she was one that I started on my own. After a few months we decided she wasn't going to be fast enough for the track and so Jack told her owners they shouldn't spend any more money on her to keep her in training. The owners were very nice people who lived in Texas and had been there several times to see how she was doing. Since she wasn't going to be a race horse, Jack told me to just ride her and get her broke really good so she would be very gentle for them. Well that was all I needed to hear and we spent hours together every evening just trail riding and practicing different manuevers. It was a sad day when they came to take Tavas home and I was again heartbroke as I watched the trailer pull out of the drive. Well the farrier was there that day and it was time to work so I got out another horse and was holding it when to my surprise here comes their trailer back in the drive! Immediately I was worried that something had happened to Tavas in the trailer, then I thought that maybe they had forgotten something. Well the next thing that happened was a total shock! Tavas' owners came up to me and said they knew how much I loved her and that they wanted to GIVE her to me. I just couldn't believe it! Of course I wanted to say yes immediately, but I didn't know if I would be able to keep her at Jacks since it was a training operation. I ran to the house to ask, hoping he would say I could keep her there and when he did say yes I was so happy I didn't know how to act. I was really going to own my very own registered Quarter Horse!
